A lot of students today are going abroad for higher studies as the global education scenario has opened up a plethora of avenues to accommodate students from different academic backgrounds. Most of the institutions have preset certain academic requirements as per their institutional needs. There are certain standardised tests that a student needs to give in order to meet these requirements.
Your performance/scores in these tests play a significant role in increasing your chances of admission to specific courses at specific colleges or universities. It may also increase your chances to acquire financial aid or scholarships.
Common Examinations for Study Abroad
As you are planning to study abroad, the admission process will require you to give one language exam and or one standardised exam. Depending on the country, course, college or university you are targeting, you may be exempted from standardised exams, but you would still be required to take one language exam to show your English language proficiency.
Language Exams
As you are going from a non-native English speaking country to a Native English speaking country, these language exams show your English proficiency skills. You need to give either one of them to get admission to any university.
These are required for pursuing almost all courses – Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Certificates or Diplomas (unless mentioned).
Different countries give preference to one language exam over others. Few of the top English language exams which are used by prominent study abroad destinations:
•IELTS is the preferred exam for getting admission to universities in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. IELTS Score is valid for two years.
•TOEFL iBT is the preferred exam for universities in the US and Canada, though it is not accepted in the UK and for the SDS program courses in Canada. Your TOEFL scores are valid until two years post the declaration of your result.
•PTE is accepted at a few colleges in the US and most colleges in the UK. CAE and CPE are given preference by British universities. Further, PTE Academic scores are valid for up to two years from the date of the exam.
•CELPIP is Canada’s leading general English test for immigration, citizenship, and professional designation
•CAEL is The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test, CE (Computer Edition), measures the English language proficiency of students planning to study at Canadian universities and colleges.
•OET is The Occupational English Test is the English language test for healthcare professionals. It assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who wish to register and practise in an English-speaking environment.
•CAE – C1 Advanced, previously known as Cambridge English: Advanced and the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), is an English language examination provided by Cambridge Assessment English (previously known as Cambridge English Language Assessment and University of Cambridge ESOL examination)
